The ASMI at Lemak Health Sports Medicine Fellowship program is accredited by the ACGME. Program Director is Dr. Lawrence Lemak; faculty members are Dr. Mike Patterson and Dr. Jordan Case.

This fellowship offers a broad experience intended to provide the Fellow with the skills and knowledge to perform at a high level in any post-fellowship environment. There is a high volume of patients, many involving athletes, requiring unique diagnostic and surgical decision-making. The basic educational method of the Fellowship programs involves the Fellows and faculty working side-by-side in all aspects of patient care. The Fellows spend 80 percent of their time in direct patient care in the clinic, operating rooms, rehabilitation, and follow-up. As surgical first assistants, the Fellows are integral participants in the pre-operative counseling and instruction of the injured athlete and provision of surgical care.

Weekly Sports Medicine Conferences are conducted for the Fellows, as well as a monthly Journal Club. Fellows are required to attend and actively participate in these educational meetings. Periodically, ASMI invites national and internationally known surgeons to visit and provide Distinguished Lectures, exposing the Fellows to an even wider range of treatment philosophies. Operative and non-operative approaches to a variety of shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and other injuries are presented. Rehabilitation principles are included as an important part of the educational program and Fellows enjoy a close working relationship with the attending physicians, physical therapists, and athletic trainers.

Requirements to successfully complete the fellowship include: regular attendance and participation at Sports Medicine Conference and Journal Club, completion of at least one research project including publication-ready manuscript, sideline coverage for an assigned high school and college football team (home and away games), participation in annual high school and college physicals, and other duties as assigned by the attending physicians. To enter the program, the applicants who Match with this program must be Board-eligible, have a Federal DEA Certificate, an Alabama medical license and Controlled Substance Certificate, and have graduated from an ACGME-accredited orthopedic residency.
