trail running by Doug Klick

Nothing is better than taking a run on a crisp, fall morning! One way to jazz up your run is to take it to the trails. Trail running can offer spectacular views, fresh air, and the chance to become one with nature. There are a few things to be mindful of before hitting the trails…

Here are a few:

OVER-TRAINING – Watch your miles and intensity a bit closer than you would on the streets. It’s easy to get caught up in the scenery and wildlife and lose track of how long you’ve ran. The trek back won’t be as invigorating. This may lead to short-term burnout or injury.

TERRAIN – Not all trails are smooth. And many trails you encounter will be more demanding. Hills, loose rocks, mud, potholes, critters, and poisonous plants are obstacles to watch out for. Remember to stay alert and always look ahead!

GEAR – Water is, of course, essential! Sunscreen, a ventilated hat, and clothing that covers sensitive skin will help protect you against the sun’s harsh rays. Get to your local athletic shoe store and ask about trail running shoes. Trail shoes offer rubber lugs and studs to keep you pasted to the trails. The North Face, Merrell, Montrail, and Asics are some brands that make quality trail shoes.
